Although the event of TEDxAUCollege 2018 might seem like yesterday, preparations for 2019 have already started. In fact, just before spring break Juul Schoevers was appointed as the new chair of TEDxAUCollege. As a central player in the organization, we figured it was time to introduce her to you, the audience. That’s why I sat down with Juul on a sunny afternoon to ask her a few questions. Read on to find out more about Juul’s favorite season, her favorite thing about being part of the TEDx team, and a glimpse of her plans for TEDxAUCollege 2019.
- Hi Juul! Thanks so much for taking the time to meet for this interview! Could you tell me a bit about yourself?
“Of course! I’m Juul, I’m a second year here at AUC and I’m majoring in the information and mathematics track. I grew up in Deventer, a small place near the East of the Netherlands. I like to be very active; I used to do a lot of sailing and play field hockey.”
- If you had to describe yourself in 3 words, which would it be?
“I’d say that I’m very determined, enthusiastic, and hard-working.”
- What is your best quality and your biggest flaw? And what quality do you appreciate most in other people?
“My best quality is that I’m a good listener. By combining listening to other people and finding out their best qualities I try to get great results. I think my biggest flaw is that I’m an overthinker, I can make myself crazy. In other people, I appreciate it when they are hard workers, but mostly honesty is of importance to me. I think that it’s very important that when you’re working with other people you’re being honest with each other, whether that’s honesty about what you’re thinking about something or being able to take in honest criticism.”
- What is your previous experience with TEDxAUCollege and how did you get involved with it?
“In my first year I was already very interested in TEDx, so at the start of my second year at AUC I decided to apply for the logistics team. Our task was mostly to find a venue for the event. Once that was arranged, we made further arrangements with the venue about catering and equipment and basically made sure that everyone in our team knew what to do on the day of the event. During my time in the logistics team I’ve grown to really love the organization of TEDxAUCollege but also TED as a whole. I wanted to become chair of TEDxAUCollege to become even more involved with the organization.”
- What do you like most about being part of the TEDxAUCollege team?
“Working with a group of students that are so enthusiastic. They don’t have to do this, but they choose to work together towards something so passionately. We’re not doing this for ourselves, but we all have the same goal. It’s so great to see how motivated everyone around me is. That also stimulates me to work harder and to deliver better work. TEDxAUCollege is special in the sense that we’re with so many, but also that we have an image to uphold. I think we did that very well and very professionally.”
- When did you know that you wanted to apply for the position of chair? What made you want to apply for the position of chair?
“I knew very early on, only after a couple of weeks of being in the logistics team. After I had decided that I wasn’t going on exchange I made up my mind very quickly. Ever since I’ve just been paying attention, picking up on things and just making sure that I was doing everything that I could to become chair. I wanted to become chair because I had learned so much about TED that I think that I have a lot to offer to the organization and that I could best do that in the position of chair. As chair you’re involved in all aspects of the organization, and I think during my time in the logistics team I learned a lot of things and picked up many skills that I could apply to the entire organization.”
- What are your plans for TEDx 2019?
“I have a very clear vision of where I want to take TEDxAUCollege. I think the previous boards of TEDx have done an amazing job at turning TEDxAUCollege into a very professional event. I really want to focus on maintaining that standard. There are a few things I’d like to change that I don’t want to reveal just yet, but the TEDx community and the audience can expect to become even more involved with TEDxAUCollege.”
