I come from a small town in Belgium, born in a working-class family. So let’s face it, the odds that I would be a university professor today were rather small. But my parents gave me all the opportunities and taught me to work hard, to never give up and to pursue relentlessly my dreams. These were important lessons that I still cherish today when I am doing my job. These are the lessons which I try to pass onto the future generations of scientists trained in my lab. Because there are no secrets behind success, it is all about working hard, about never giving up and about believing in yourself.
